In the Tracking Asteroids workshop, students were able to find out how asteroids are discovered in astronomical images, and then how the “follow-up” work is done that helps astronomers determine an accurate orbit.
Students used the software package Astrometrica, and image files from the Spaceguard Centre’s own telescopes.
The activities were based on an outreach project run by the Spaceguard Centre called Asteroid Quest. You can find information about everything you need to know about this activity, and how to do it in your own school at the link below.
